CHALLENGE

The way students in Baltimore experience public transportation is no secret. It’s the consistent barrier that prevents them from getting to school, places of employment, or extracurricular activities on time or at all. The Fund for Educational Excellence decided to make this topic part of a study, which consisted of interviews with 274 students across the city.

However, in addition to releasing a data-driven paper on matter, The Fund also wanted to have a visual component that could provide an emotional connection to the lives of the students themselves, giving them a platform to tell their stories and invite the audience into their world. This one-two punch of the study and the video series would go a long way in getting more eyes on the problem and make it a political priority in the coming Maryland gubernatorial election.

SOLUTION

To achieve the goals of The Fund, we focused on the personal experiences of two students in Baltimore, and interviewed them to learn more about their interactions with public transportation in relation to getting to and from school. We used their words to construct a production strategy that would enable us to capture key moments in each student’s commute and home-life.

This included visiting with them and exploring their neighborhoods and schools, as well as coordinating with the MTA to acquire buses to film on. We wanted to take a cinematic approach to everything in order to convey the dramatic nature of the issue, using handheld cameras, as well as an ominous soundscape. Overall, our goal was to create an experience for the viewer to step into, and to compel them to take action by learning more via The Fund’s microsite.

Client Testimonial

“I work for an education nonprofit in Baltimore City. Stereoscope Studios produced two extremely high quality videos for us based on research we had done.

We wanted to tell the story of the research in a new way so that other folks could engage with the stories of students in Baltimore. They communicated well the whole time, met deadlines, were organized and also included us in the whole video process from start to finish.

They were always available to problem-solve as well. I highly recommend Stereoscope Studios for all of your video needs!”
